In the late 90s, we had dial-up, during the 2000s we transitioned from ADSL to broadband, in the 2010s we started moving to fibre. By 2030 broadband providers will install 100Gbps connections in homes and businesses across the UK. High-speed bandwidth will become ubiquitous, powering the desktop computers, mobile devices and gaming consoles we’ve become accustomed to using every day.

But what will this massive leap in bandwidth enable? It’s not just Netflix we’re talking about here. We should look at the broader scale of how our communication networks will look like in the future.

Ubiquitous low latency unlimited bandwidth will advance consumer, medical, education, finance, and e-commerce industries.

The increase in bandwidth will enable hundreds of sensors in our clothes and homes, to monitor our wellbeing and environment. Personal health data will flow from the house directly to healthcare providers. AI and machine learning will allow diagnosis and even treatment of health issues at home.

Immersive experiences with 360° video applications require a lot of data. 100Gbps internet will enable telepresence to allow people to be virtually together even though they are hundreds of miles apart in reality. Gaming in 3D will become so realistic it will be difficult to distinguish between the game and reality.

Technologies such as Elon Musk’s Neurolink need low lag high capacity bandwidth and will allow us to control internet-connected devices with our mind. (4)

With 100Gbps broadband to the home, there will be changes to the way we live, which are almost incomprehensible to everyday people. Whether that’s to be relished or not is another subject.
