What Speed Do You Actually Need?

Most households overpay for speeds they'll never use. Ofcom's 2025 report found that the average UK household uses just 60% of its available bandwidth — meaning millions are paying for gigabit when 100 Mbps would be plenty. Here's a quick guide based on what you actually do online.

UsagePeopleSpeed NeededMonthly Cost
Light browsing, email, social media1–230–50 MbpsFrom £20/mo
Streaming HD/4K, video calls, WFH2–4100–300 MbpsFrom £24/mo
Gaming, large downloads, multiple streamers4+500 Mbps–1 GbpsFrom £25/mo
Home office, content creation, smart home4+1 Gbps+From £30/mo

Not sure? Enter your postcode above and we'll show you the best deals for your area, filtered by the speeds that actually reach your address — not just what providers advertise. We check real availability data from Openreach, Virgin Media, and every altnet in our database so you only see speeds you can genuinely get.

Full Fibre vs Part-Fibre: What's the Difference?

bolt

FTTP (Full Fibre)

Runs fibre optic cable directly into your home. That means consistent speeds whether it's 6pm on a weekday or 3am on a Sunday. No copper bottleneck.

Speeds from 100 Mbps to 3 Gbps, with uploads that match your downloads. Ideal for working from home, 4K streaming on multiple devices, online gaming, and large file transfers. Latency is lower too — typically under 5ms.

cable

FTTC (Part-Fibre)

Runs fibre to the green cabinet on your street, then uses old copper phone lines for the last stretch to your home. That copper section slows everything down.

Maximum speeds cap at around 80 Mbps, and uploads crawl at 20 Mbps. The further you are from the cabinet, the worse it gets. Peak-time slowdowns are common because you share bandwidth with your neighbours. With the PSTN copper network switching off by 2027, FTTC is a technology with a limited future.

82% of UK homes can now get full fibre — up from under 50% just two years ago. Openreach, CityFibre, and dozens of independent altnets have been rolling out FTTP at record pace. If you haven't checked recently, enter your postcode — there's a good chance a full fibre provider has reached your street since you last looked.

Why Switch to Full Fibre?

The internet landscape has changed. See why thousands are leaving traditional copper connections for modern Altnets.

Switch in Under 2 Minutes

One Touch Switch means your new provider handles everything. You don't need to phone your old one. The process was introduced by Ofcom in April 2023 and has already helped over 3 million UK households switch broadband without hassle.

1

Check your postcode

Enter your postcode above. We'll show you every provider and deal available at your exact address — including altnets that the big comparison sites don't cover.

2

Pick a deal

Compare prices, speeds, contract lengths, and whether the price is fixed or subject to annual CPI hikes. Filter by what matters to you.

3

Your new provider does the rest

Sign up directly with your chosen provider. One Touch Switch coordinates the handover automatically. Typical downtime: 1–2 hours on switch day. No engineer visit needed for most full fibre installations.

The Providers Most Comparison Sites Don't Show You

Altnets (alternative network providers) are the companies building brand-new full fibre networks across the UK. Names like Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Brsk, Toob, and Gigaclear. They're not BT or Sky — and that's the point. These independent providers now cover over 12 million UK premises and are growing fast, often offering the most competitive prices and best customer service ratings in the industry.

Because they're building fresh FTTP infrastructure rather than leasing Openreach's legacy network, altnets typically offer:

  • check_circleFixed-price contracts — no CPI + 3.9% hikes every April
  • check_circleSymmetrical speeds — uploads as fast as downloads
  • check_circleLower prices — gigabit for under £30/mo in many areas
  • check_circleBetter customer service — smaller companies, faster response times

CompareFibre covers 38+ providers including altnets that Uswitch, MoneySupermarket, and Broadband Choices don't list. That's why we exist — to make sure you see every option available at your address, not just the ones paying the biggest commissions. Our results are sorted by value, not by how much a provider pays us.

Broadband Prices Are Going Up in April 2026

Every year, most big providers raise prices mid-contract by CPI + 3.9%. Here's what's coming in April:

ProviderIncreaseFixed-Price Alternative?
BT / EE+£4/moYes — Brsk, Hyperoptic, Community Fibre
Virgin Media+£4/moYes — Toob, YouFibre, Gigaclear
Sky+£3/moYes — Multiple altnets
Vodafone+£3.50/moYes — Check your postcode
Plusnet+£4/moYes — Cuckoo, Zen Internet
TalkTalk+£3.50/moYes — Check your postcode

If you're on one of these providers, you'll see the increase on your April bill. You can switch to a fixed-price altnet contract with no mid-contract rises — and in most cases, get faster speeds for less money. Under Ofcom rules, providers must notify you 30 days before any price increase, and you can leave without penalty within that notice period even if you're mid-contract.
