About Pine Media

Before signing up for any broadband provider, it’s important to make sure you know a little about the company you’re teaming with, including the provider’s history, principles and working practices. Pine Media are Sheffield-based Gigabit Specialists.  Most Sheffield homes still rely on traditional fibre connections; using fibre to the green cabinets you see on pavements but then copper phone lines to get to your home. They don’t use copper cables to get to your home and this is what sets them apart and makes our broadband so speedy and reliable. Their Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) brings an ultra-fast and future-proof fibre all the way to your door.

Pine Media are proud to be a local Sheffield company, employing a fast-growing local team. Their network currently reaches over 20,000 homes and businesses and their 2021 build will take this to 50,000 and beyond.

Who are Pine Media?

Pine Media started building broadband networks in 2015 with the goal of freeing communities from the poor speeds, slow customer service and high prices of the major telecommunication giants. How do they do this? By installing their own full-fibre across South Yorkshire, they can deliver ultra-fast Fibre To The Premises (FTTP), often where other providers can’t. When they reach your road, you may see them working on BT telegraph poles and ducts. They tend to use these to reduce the amount of digging required. If you sign up, they usually install your new fibre cable in the same way as your BT copper phone line: either overhead or underground through existing ducting. Your BT line is unaffected and can even operate at the same time as your new FTTP service.

Pine Media Broadband speed

Whatever your requirements, there’s a good range of speeds available with Pine Media’s broadband packages. Offered at a range of price points, Pine Media offers broadband packages with average download speeds of 40Mbps all the way up to Gigabit full-fibre broadband, this makes them one of the key Alt Nets in the rollout to bring Gigabit Broadband to 85% of UK premises by 2025- as set by the UK Government. Customers in need of broadband to browse simple web pages and send emails should consider opting for a more basic package, while customers needing fast broadband for downloading, streaming, and gaming should take a look at Pine Media’s premium packages.

How fast is Pine Media broadband?

Broadband connections are measured by two kinds of speed: download speed and upload speed. The download speed of a broadband service measures how fast information and images can be downloaded. This includes loading web pages, emails, images, and even streaming TV and games. Upload speed measures how quickly data can be uploaded via the internet connection. Upload speeds are typically slower than download speeds, and they’re also usually less of a priority for most customers. This might affect how quickly you can upload videos to YouTube, but it might also affect the quality of video calls on Skype, WhatsApp, and other platforms.

Pine Media offers several packages with speeds ranging from a steady 40Mbps right up to 1000 Mbps (1Gbps). The range available here offers good coverage for many different customers, with the provider’s more basic packages offering good service for users with low needs, while the 220Mbps and above packages should be enough for most customers with heavy internet use.

How much does Pine Media broadband cost?

The cost of Pine Media services depends on which package you opt for. Prices start from £24.98 for their basic 40Mbps package and work up to £59.99 a month for 1000Mbps. This is a very competitive price with the benchmark average for Alt Net Gigabit connection being around £40 a month. Specifically in Sheffield also, this is a very good option as other Alt Nets providing this service simply do not exist at this time. Therefore, location and speed relative to cost suggest this is a good option.

On top of the monthly cost, there is also a £25 activation fee for all packages.

How long is the minimum contract length for Pine Media broadband?

All of Pine Media’s broadband packages are offered with a minimum contract length of 12 months, which means customers will be charged an exit fee if they decide to change provider before the 12 month period has passed. This is a pretty reasonable minimum contract length and most providers offer contracts of between 12 and 24 months.

How do I check if Pine Media broadband is in my area?

The Pine Media website has a checker here: https://pinemedia.net/, which you can use to check whether Pine Media broadband covers your area. Simply type your postcode into the box to check if Pine Media’s coverage is available to you. Pine Media offers coverage across much of South Yorkshire. If Pine Media aren’t operating in your area at the moment, it’s worth keeping an eye out; this broadband provider is always looking for new areas to expand into.

What sort of router do you get with Pine Media?

The type of router provided with a broadband package is just as important as the speeds you expect with it. For example, if you purchased Gigabit speed broadband but your router was not Gigabit capable, you would not be able to get the advertised speeds. This then makes the choice of router a very important factor in choosing a broadband package. The 40Mbps service includes a Mikrotik AC Lite router, a powerful cost-efficient router for their consumer friendly entry level package. All packages starting at 100Mbps and above include a Plume Superpod and Plume HomePass®, forming an intelligent WiFi network that is managed through a simple mobile application. Plume is a mesh WiFi system that aims to boost your home network’s speed and reliability. A range of Pine Media’s packages come with a free SuperPod, and for larger homes that need more coverage, you can order additional Superpods for £5/month each. If you feel like your house may need additional WiFi coverage, please get in touch with pine Media’s support team who will arrange to send you as many Superpods as you may need. Plume continually optimises your WiFi network. It’s like having your own personal technician who is constantly working to ensure that your WiFi remains Hyperfast. If you need it, personalisation is all managed through a simple mobile application.
