About Virgin Fibre Broadband

Virgin Fibre Broadband is one of the country’s most popular choices for a fast and reliable connection. With four different fibre broadband packages – three of which are available as broadband without landline deals – Virgin has something for everyone.

When you set up Virgin Fibre broadband, you can choose to collect your QuickStart Kit from your local collection point. Otherwise, it can be delivered to your door for installation following instructions. If you’re not comfortable setting up alone, Virgin can send an engineer to your house within 14 days of your order being placed.

With Virgin Media, you can choose from bundles that include a phone line, phone SIM or your choice of TV package. You’ll have a lot of flexibility with plenty of options, so you can tailor your broadband package to meet your family’s needs.

What is Virgin Fibre Broadband?

Virgin Fibre Broadband is Virgin’s fast internet service. In fact, it’s the fastest widely-available broadband product in the UK. High-speed fibre optic connections keep your data travelling fast, so you can upload and download quicker than ever for streaming, gaming and sharing.

Virgin Fibre Broadband also comes with Virgin’s Intelligent WiFi router, which should problem-solve and troubleshoot on its own. This means limited downtime, with most issues fixed automatically so you don’t need to worry.

You can connect all your devices at once. Virgin Fibre Broadband can comfortably cope with several games consoles, PCs, laptops, smartphones, voice assistant devices and more. There are four different broadband products to choose from, though Virgin will help you to make your decision by making it clear what each one offers. The more devices and the more demanding your internet use, the more expensive your internet package will need to be. Fortunately, even Virgin’s second-lowest package – the M100 – can cope with up to 9 devices and stream your favourite boxsets successfully.

Do Virgin Fibre use fibre optic technology?

Virgin Fibre Broadband uses fibre optic cables that lie underneath the streets you walk on. These lead to Virgin’s nearest cabinet, where connections are sent to individual houses. Between the cabinet and your home, high-speed copper cables are used. These are much thicker than standard copper cables, maintaining the speed of your internet connection even if you’re a long way from the cabinet.

Virgin Fibre Broadband isn’t actually ‘full fibre’. The use of copper cables for what’s often called the ‘last mile’ means that you’re not getting a full fibre optic connection. However, Virgin believes that their unique copper cables are more than enough to provide broadband speeds that leave their competitors in the dust.

Do I need a phone line for Virgin Fibre Broadband?

One of the benefits of Virgin Fibre Broadband is that you don’t need a home phone line. If you want one, it’s added as an optional extra and available with some Virgin packages.

Most other internet providers need phone lines for installation. Virgin uses its own cable network, so you don’t need a landline connection to make use of Virgin’s high-speed internet.

If you do want a landline connection, Virgin makes that an option. Virgin Weekend packages give you free landline calls on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as free weekend calls to Virgin Mobile phones.

Adding a Virgin Phone Line to your package typically increases your monthly cost by £5-£10.

Virgin Fibre Broadband Speed

One of the most important factors of any internet connection is the broadband speed you’ll get. A reliable connection is great, but if it isn’t fast enough for all that you want to do then you might as well not be connected.

Virgin’s website makes it easy to find expected speeds for their high-speed fibre broadband. But, more than that, they help you to see what those speeds really mean in layman’s terms. Essentially, the faster your connection the more devices you can use and the more demand your broadband can handle. Faster connections can play games and stream on several devices at once, whilst a slower connection might make it harder to keep up with your favourite shows.

How fast is Virgin Fibre Broadband?

Virgin offers four fibre broadband internet packages. The M50 package has average download speeds of 54Mbps. The M100 has average speeds of 108Mbps. The M200 averages 213Mbps, with the fastest connection – the M300 – averaging 362Mbps. Average upload speeds are 5, 10, 20 and 36Mbps respectively.

Virgin’s average speeds are significantly faster than any of their UK competitors. For comparison, Sky’s Superfast broadband offers speeds of 59Mbps on average. This means that another provider’s fastest product may only be a little better than Sky Broadband’s most basic offering. Sky’s M200 package, their second fastest, is suitable for homes packed with the latest tech and for gaming, streaming and browsing without signs of trouble.

Virgin M100 Fibre Broadband

Virgin’s M100 Fibre Broadband offers average upload speeds of 108Mbps. Download speeds for this product average 10Mbps.

For most homes, the M100 package is more than enough to stay connected. It can comfortably accommodate up to 10 devices, so every member of your busy family can get online at the same time for working, studying and family movie nights.

On its own, Virgin M100 costs £44 per month with an 18-month contract. You may be able to start on a much lower rate if you bundle other items together. If you’re choosing a bundle, just watch out for price increases at the end of your contract. Usually, these have an introductory offer that can make a bundle much cheaper but leave prices rising later.

Virgin M350 Fibre Broadband

Virgin’s M350 Fibre Broadband package is their fastest available. It can comfortably cope with excessive amounts of gaming, streaming and browsing. You’d struggle to find the limits of the M350 connection, which has average download speeds of 362Mbps. Upload speeds average 36Mbps.

M350 is the broadband to choose if your house is filled with high-tech devices, or if you have several teenagers that all want to play their favourite online games at the same time. For many users, this product is overkill – more than you could need to stay connected at home – but you might decide that you want a connection that can withstand whatever you throw at it.

On its own, Virgin M350 costs £56 per month. This is the price that locks you into an 18-month contract. You may get a lower price by choosing to add other products to your bundle, but if you do this you’ll need to watch out for a price rise when the contract ends. Often these bundles are initially cheaper, but you’ll want to switch products in future.

Virgin Fibre Broadband Review

For more than a decade, Virgin has provided the UK’s fastest broadband internet connections. More than 5 million UK customers depend on Virgin’s speedy service. With such a large customer base it’s clear that Virgin’s getting something right, though you’ll want to be sure that Virgin’s right for you before you commit to a contract.

Is Virgin Fibre Broadband any good?

If internet speed is your priority, there’s simply no reason not to choose Virgin. Their fibre broadband speeds leave competitors standing, and nobody’s close to catching up. Even the biggest and busiest households won’t struggle with Virgin connection speeds, so it’s no surprise that Virgin has the attention of multitaskers that like to play games whilst streaming HD movies in a home that’s full of online smart devices.

Reliability, with Virgin, can be a bit of a mixed bag. A vast majority of customers will be very happy with a connection that they can always trust. Most Virgin customers experience very little downtime. Sometimes individual neighbourhoods can have more problems than others, though this is the case with any broadband internet provision.

It’s clear that Virgin is trying to phase out the need for manned customer support lines, so if you do run into any problems then a call might not get things resolved. Virgin’s WiFi routers have intelligent software and try to fix most problems on their own, though if this doesn’t work then an automated phone line might talk you through some basic troubleshooting. It can be hard to get in touch with an actual human, though thankfully most customers don’t need to.

Is Virgin the best broadband provider?

If you’re trying to find the best broadband provider, there are a few different things to consider. If you want the fastest, certainly Virgin is the obvious choice. Virgin Fibre’s broadband speeds simply can’t be matched by competitors. However, reliability depends on your location and neighbourhood. It’s important to do a coverage check to set your expectations realistically.

In terms of price, Virgin connections are roughly in line with competitors. Virgin’s most basic offering, if purchased with a phone line in an 18-month bundled contract, is roughly the same cost as Sky’s Superfast broadband.

Much of your decision might come down to other media products. Both Virgin and Sky, the other leading broadband provider, have their own TV offerings. You might like to choose between Sky TV and Virgin, if you’re sitting on the fence about the actual internet connection. Virgin also offers mobile bundles that include a SIM card with data, so this might be something that you also consider if you’re choosing an internet provider.

Virgin is the only provider that can offer broadband without a phone line. So, this is the obvious choice if you don’t have – or don’t want – a landline.

Are all Virgin Broadband packages unlimited?

All Virgin broadband packages are truly unlimited, with no web traffic management. You can upload and download as much as you like, with no restrictions in place.

Virgin Media packages

Whilst you have the option of broadband-only, most customers choose to bundle Virgin Fibre with other Virgin Media products. You can save money by bundling your broadband with TV, a phone line or a SIM for your mobile device.

In many cases, it’s cheaper to get broadband alongside something else than to choose a broadband-only offering. This is because Virgin earns loyalty by showing off other Virgin products. If they can encourage you to try Virgin TV or switch your smartphone to the Virgin network, they’re likely to earn a more loyal long-term customer that proudly uses several Virgin products.

If you do choose to bundle your broadband, carefully look at the contract length and the price once your initial contract ends. In most cases there are great savings for 18 months, making broadband bundles a lot cheaper than broadband on its own. Then, when the initial contract ends, the prices become more realistic.

Virgin Media fibre internet packages

Virgin Media offers three fibre internet packages to purchase independently. You can get M100, M200 or M350 on their own. Virgin’s slowest connection, M50, is not available without a phone bundle.

For most people, M100 is more than enough for day-to-day browsing and streaming. You can sit down and watch your shows in the evening, whilst scrolling through your favourite social media. During the day, M100 should keep you reliably connected for Zoom calls and other work commitments.

The M200 Virgin internet package is great for larger families, so everyone can watch their favourite shows in HD whilst using their own devices. With M200 you can connect more than 10 devices without any drop in speed or quality.

The M350 package is Virgin’s fastest standard internet offering. There’s little you can’t do with this internet package, even in the busiest of households.

Virgin Media phone packages

Virgin Media phone packages can be bundled with your broadband connection. This usually brings the price of your broadband and phone down for the first 18 months. After your 18 month contract, prices can rise pretty steeply – watch out for the contract end date, and switch if the new price is too high.

Virgin typically offers what it calls the Talk Weekends deal for broadband. This includes a Virgin phone line with free landline calls at the weekend, and with free weekend calls to Virgin Mobile devices and 0870 numbers.

Talk Weekends is usually bundled with TV or Virgin broadband. You can also get a bundle with all three products if you want to save even more money.

Virgin Media TV and fibre broadband packages

Virgin TV provides 4K-ready entertainment through your WiFi connection.

The standard Virgin TV package – Big – includes some movie, sport and children’s channels. With this, there are 111 channels to watch on your Virgin TV box. You also have the option of upgrading from Big to Big + Drama, Bigger, Bigger + Movies or Ultimate Oomph. The latter comes with more than 250 different channels including Sky channels, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network for the kids.

Virgin TV works beautifully with Virgin fibre broadband, thanks to Virgin’s high-speed fibre connections that help to stream 4K with no buffering. You can bundle TV and broadband to save on Virgin Media products.

With all Virgin TV bundles, you’ll also have access to the Virgin Media Store. Here, find many of the latest movies, boxsets and pay-per-view sports.

Virgin Fibre Broadband Offers

If you’re buying Virgin Fibre Broadband, don’t rush into your decision. Look around for Virgin Broadband offers, which are widely available. You could also save money by choosing to bundle Virgin’s internet with other Virgin products. Virgin want you on board as a customer, so don’t be afraid to ask what deals they can offer to tempt you to switch.

How much is Virgin Fibre Broadband?

If you’re buying Virgin Fibre without other bundled items, expect to pay £44 per month for M100, £50 per month for M200 and £56 per month for M350. A £35 setup fee usually applies, though if you time things right this may not be charged.

Virgin would rather tempt you to bundle your broadband with other Virgin products. This means that your initial contract might be cheaper with other products added. For example, M100 with a Virgin phone line drops down to £29 per month. M350 in a similar bundle costs £41 per month. Just watch out for the price increase at the end of your contract, when these two products increase to £51 and £63 respectively.

How long is the contract for Virgin Media fibre broadband?

When you order Virgin Media fibre broadband, your contract locks you in for 18 months. After 18 months, the price of your connection may increase. You’re particularly likely to see a large price increase if you chose a Virgin Media bundle. Usually, these products are priced very low to hook you in and encourage brand loyalty.

After 18 months, you’ll want to shop around or contact Virgin and start haggling. Theoretically, there’s no good reason to pay full price for your broadband and Virgin Media bundle.

How much is Virgin Media TV and fibre broadband package?

A basic ‘Big’ Broadband, TV and Phone bundle will cost £33 per month initially. After your first 18 months, this rises to £56. This bundle includes M50 broadband with average download speeds of 56Mbps.

You’ll also receive the Big TV package, with 111+ channels, and a Talk Weekend phone deal.

After the Big package, the next step up is charged at £37.99 per month. This rises to £74 at the end of your 18-month contract. For your money Virgin adds documentary and drama channels to your TV package, as well as upgrading to M100 Virgin Fibre broadband.

The Bigger Bundle includes movies and an M200 connection. This costs £57 per month, rising to £103 per month, with more than 222 channels to choose from.

Your final option is the Ultimate Oomph, which costs £89 per month initially. When your initial contract comes to an end, you’ll be charged £139 per month. Ultimate Oomph comes with 516Mbps average internet speeds, plus more than 248 channels to enjoy with your speedy connection. You also get two Virgin TV boxes, so you can set one up in the lounge and another in a bedroom or den.

Virgin Fibre Broadband Checker

Not all homes have access to Virgin Fibre broadband coverage. Before you sign up for an 18-month contract, you’ll want to be sure that you can get the internet connection you need.

Can I get Virgin Fibre Broadband?

Many people can get Virgin Fibre Broadband. But, though coverage is growing, Virgin Media still covers less than 50% of the UK.

Other broadband providers have better coverage, with BT’s fibre optic network reaching around 90% of UK homes, so you will have other options if you can’t yet get Virgin Fibre Broadband.

Virgin Fibre Broadband postcode availability check

Virgin offer a postcode availability check on their website. Simply enter your postcode to see whether you’re covered and what speeds you should expect to get. Entering your postcode will give you access to the list of packages to choose from. Availability may vary.

You can choose to enter your telephone number if you’d like to get a call from Virgin Customer Support. This is completely optional, so you can check if your house is covered without making a commitment to be contacted.

Virgin Fibre Broadband coverage map

Virgin Media doesn’t offer an official broadband coverage map. You can, however, find many unofficial attempts with a quick search online.

If you want to know if you’re covered, you can enter your postcode on the Virgin Media website. This is the fastest and most accurate way to see if you can get Virgin broadband. If you’re planning to move house, check in advance by entering your new home’s postcode.

Virgin Media Customer Services

Virgin Media customer services provide a hit-and-miss experience. It can be difficult to get in touch with a real person, with much of their support automated.

Support automation comes with its strengths, as well as some potential weaknesses. Intelligent computers help to troubleshoot problems, so your router may even fix itself.

Virgin Fibre customer service number

If you need to speak to the Virgin Fibre customer service team, it’s best to visit the website. Once you’ve chosen the best description for your query, you’ll be directed to troubleshooting guides that might help you to resolve it on your own.

If troubleshooting guides aren’t enough- for example Virgin Media is down and your require live support, you will have the option to start a live chat. You can also phone 0345 454 1111 for support.

Virgin Fibre Broadband speed test

Access your Virgin Media online account to find out what speed you should be getting. There are third party websites to run internet speed tests and check that you’re getting what you should.

The Virgin Media website includes its own broadband speed test. You’ll be shown a summary of your download and upload speeds.

How to cancel Virgin broadband

If you’d like to move away from Virgin Broadband, you’ll need to have reached your contract end date. You’re probably locked into an 18-month contract, so may have to pay an early termination fee and clear any outstanding payments if you want to leave early.

As your contract comes to an end, you can contact Virgin Media to cancel your broadband and any other bundled items. You may be able to haggle with Virgin to get a better price for the future. To cancel, call the customer support team on 0345 454 1111.
